Nutrient Toxicity Field Guide

Possible excess pattern / 03

Potassium

Darkened, crisp, or curling margins often begin at leaf edges and can overlap with several environmental patterns.

May show first

Leaf edges, often on older leaves.

Growlytics potassium toxicity chart showing a healthy leaf reference and possible early dark leaf edges, progressing marginal scorch, and late brittle necrosis signals.
This supplied field chart includes a healthy reference and possible early, progression, and late-stage cues. Use it to compare patterns, not to confirm a diagnosis.

Pattern cues

Compare the stages with healthy growth.

Healthy reference

Compare leaf edges with healthy leaves under similar light exposure before treating a dark or crisp margin as a nutrient signal.

Early

Leaf margins can darken; edges may crisp or curl while centers stay green.

Progression

Marginal scorch can expand while calcium- or magnesium-like symptoms overlap.

Late stage

Widespread edge necrosis, brittle foliage, and an uneven canopy response may appear.

Not the same as deficiency

Similar symptoms can point in different directions.

Deficiency guides describe patterns associated with limited availability. This toxicity guide records possible excess-pattern cues. Either pattern can resemble the other when uptake or growing conditions are disrupted.

Check before acting

Look beyond the leaf.

These signals can overlap with nutrient lockout, pH or EC imbalance, watering and root-zone conditions, light or heat stress, and broader environmental factors. Use the pattern as an observation prompt, not a diagnosis or a treatment instruction.
